We recently heard some rumors that Apple will not be able to equip the iPhone 14 with the brand new 3nm technology, and it would instead opt to use the currently existing 5nm process. A new rumor now claims that Apple has no plans to slow down, in fact, it plans to introduce 3nm Apple Silicon chips to both the iPhone and Mac series of devices in 2023.
According to The Information, Apple plans to continue working on the 3nm technology, despite the chip shortage issue that is currently affecting all industries and manufacturers around the world. The source mentions that Apple has plans to develop faster, and more efficient chipsets in the coming years.
The source also mentioned the new 3nm technology wouldn’t only arrive to iPhones, but also to the Mac lineup. The current M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max chips are all fabricated on the 5-nanometer process, one of the most efficient and technologically advanced processes yet in a consumer electronics device. Apple is expected to make further advancements to the 5nm process and keep using the technology until it can replace it with the 3nm process in 2023.
Apple will partner up with TSMC to produce the 3nm chipsets for the Mac computers in 2023, and these may feature four dies, with up to 40 CPU cores in total per chip. The other three versions of the third-generation of chips are codenamed as “Ibiza”, “Lobos”, and “Palma”, according to the source (via 9to5Mac).
The roadmap suggests that Apple will outperform Intel’s processors for consumer PCs, which it has already done with the latest M1 Pro and M1 Max SoCs, so no big surprises here. The iPhone is also expected to have massive improvements to both efficiency and performance. Although the report doesn’t mention the iPad lineup, we would also expect Apple to use the same chipsets as in the M1 laptops for the Pro models, and the same SoCs for the more affordable devices as in iPhones.
